- You'll just need a couple of ingredients to make these easy crostini!
- They are great to prep in advance and serve at a dinner party!
Key Ingredients
- Baguette: I recommend a crusty baguette, such as French or sourdough. See my tips below for how to slice the baguette.
- Olive oil: The oil will help the crostini turn golden brown.
- Kosher salt: I generously salt the baguette.
- Freshly cracked black pepper: I always recommend freshly cracked pepper as it is much more flavorful than pre-ground pepper.
- Optional: garlic: To make garlic crostini, rub a halved clove of garlic all of the crostini when they come out of the oven (careful to not burn yourself!).
How to make crostini
1. Arrange the sliced bread on a baking sheet and brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Flip the bread over and repeat on the other side.
2. Bake the crostini at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Tip: set a timer or keep a close eye, they can overcook quickly!
Prep ahead tips
Crostini can be made up to 1 day in advance, making them great to prep ahead for parties!
After the crostini has cooled, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. While they will last for a couple of days, they tend to taste freshest within 1 day.
Deciding how to slice the baguette
The French or sourdough baguette can be sliced straight on to create perfect oval-shaped crostini. Alternatively, you can opt to slice the bread on a bias to create more surface area top topping. The choice is up to you but I tend to opt for slicing on a bias more often than not.
Tip: often times bakeries will slice a baguette for you, saving you time! Ask your bakery if they will slice the baguette.
Making crostini on the stove or grill instead
You can absolutely grill or cook the baguette on the stovetop. Prepare the baguette the same way and then grill or cook over medium-high heat, flipping halfway, until golden.
If grilling them, I recommend slicing the bread on a bias to make them larger pieces that won't fall through the grill grates as easily.
While these other methods work, I still prefer the oven because this results in even cooking and gets the center of the bread crispy. Plus, it is a more "hands-off" method, meaning you can prep the toppings while they are baking.
